for painted metal parts, use steel wool..it works better than sanding paper
but, yes, tougher works

komrads,

my Kalash aksu.

used 1000grit sandpapaper yung halos upod na para pakonti konti lang ang removal ng paint, and blunt screwdriver to add scratches to the wood furniture. for plum effect used bosny metallic burgundy then konting flat black para mabawasan yung pagka red ng pistol grip, for the magazine naman used varnish mahogany color paint mga 4 to 5 coats brush mo lang hanggang almost dry para makuha yung effect na streaks, tapos sand down again with 1000 grit para mawala yung shine.biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

hope you like it.

tama, kom LS -- mga furniture makers at mga painters. linseed oil is also used by them (ung mga artista, ha, hindi ung pinturero ng mga bahay at iba't ibang bagay biggrin.gif ) to dilute and mix oil paints for canvasses.

btw, use boiled linseed oil.

and i agree, komrad SP -- steel wool is much better than sandpaper, especially after final clear coating. either that or an old pair of denims or camos. use the rougher parts of the cloth. for denims, those parts where the brass rivets are or where there are double-overlapped joints. for camos, use the parts where there are cloth joins. the result is similar to buffing, but rougher. and it gives the surface that well used look.

me, cos i'm OC, i even spray silicon oil over spots of the weapon. gives it that final well-used but well taken cared of look. besides it protects the finish from the perspiration and body oils you produce during play.

danda, danda, kom Mossad. personally, i'd want some more nicks and dents, but maybe it's just the lighting -- maybe some detail pics? suma tutal: keep in mind that the acknowledged experts say "you only have to please yourself," or, as komrad stan says, "whatever floats your boat." cool.gif

have fun ! filakairsoft/construction.gif

suspetsa ko nga. minsan pa eh ung anggulo at tipo ng ilaw ang nakapagbabago ng porma sa pic. madumi ilaw dito sa 'tin sa pinas. i've experienced great lighting for pics in the land of the geisha, por eksampol. and i think guinness' pics (aside from the expensive camera cool.gif ) is due to the quality of the environment in colorado where he is. happy.gif

great work, like i sed filakairsoft/aprub.gif

Nice one komrad mossad filakairsoft/aprub.gif

yung penguin na brand ng steel wool fanget.. ano ba mas ok?

EDIT: finished my first attempt at weathering the plastic parts of my AKM. Sadly, the shade of the handguard and the butt stock are different. I tried redoing everything 5 times, to no avail. maybe because it used to have varnish, even after I sanded it the color seems different. tongue.gif

Are there RS AK's with different shades of handguards and butt stocks? rolleyes.gif

I have seen the upper handguard in a darker shade than the lower and vice versa, but the butt stock? tongue.gif

CORRECTION!!!

contrary to what i sed earlier, THERE ARE steel wool grades. verified this last friday at Ace Hardware in Makati. here are the two brands i found there:

user posted image

the blue one is labeled ultrafine:

user posted image

the yellow one is unbranded and labeled Grade 0 -- Fine, made in China.

user posted image

can you spot the difference?

user posted image
fine (yellow label) on top; ultra fine (blue label) below.

used both on a current project. the ultra fine works best on painted parts, IMHO -- konting haplos lang, aus na. the fine is a bit too rough for my taste. and you have to be very careful not to rub it over the surface too long or too hard.
unsure.gif

apologies to komrad LS and to all komrads reading this thread: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa filakairsoft/oops0000.gif

i would imagine, kom LS, that there would be, somewhere out there, an rs AK with different colored parts. but haven't seen a pic of one, yet tongue.gif
