One of the Yarik Kalsador's quad mags broke down during the short stroking test runs. Turned out that the tabs holding the coil spring in place snapped off. Let's see how we can fix it.

Arrow in the pic below points to the broken tabs. In the middle is the aluminum tube from an LPEG and at right is the mag coil carrier.

To replace the spring lock tabs, we can cut off about 5mm of that aluminum tube and slide it into the axle of the winding wheel, right?

user posted image

The lower part of the winding wheel axle is too fat so we have to shave off part of the winding wheel axle so that the aluminum tube can slide into place.

We have to be careful not to shave too much off the axle. Much easier to take off material than rebuilding the axle to get a tight fit between the axle and the aluminum tube sad.gif

Next task is to cut notches that will hold the end of the mag coil spring in place.

Then we have to cut off that end of the tube where the notches have been made.

Oki dokey. Now we have to enlarge the red hole in the in the spring carrier and another similar hole in the winding mechanism shell so that our rebuilt winding wheel axle can rotate freely to wind the spring.

The plastic shell is soft enough so we can use a curved file, a knife, or a rotary grinding bit to enlarge the hole.

The edges of those enlarged holes must be smooth enough to allow free axle rotation so we have to sand and lubricate that edge.

Two parts done! smile.gif

Let's see if things fit as planned unsure.gif

First, the aluminum over the shaved axle:

Next, the spring in the rebuilt notches.

Third, the rebuilt axle into the winding mechanism shell.

They fit so we can now glue the aluminum tube to the shaved axle before we try fitting the entire caboodle together.

Goodahhh! That works, doesn't it?biggrin.gif Hallelujaaahhhh!!! tongue.gif

After cleaning everything to make sure no stray bits have gotten in to muck up the works and gluing the aluminum replacement to the shaved axle, we have to test the assembled mechanism to see if it feeds bbs properly.

Done! Back to testing the short-stroked Yarik Kalsador cool.gif

don't deserve those bows, kom Yarik. i forgot to mention that the original repair idea came from a 1AD member. just can't remember his username. he used a key ring, IIRC, and i just tried to improve on the concept. his idea works if you have one working retaining tab on the axle. my version will work even if both two tabs were broken. wink.gif

but thanks just the same for the compliments.
