Kobra EKP-1S-03(M)
The Kobra is used by members of the OMON SPETsNAZ, famous worldwide as the elite special operations forces of the Russian MVD. Photographs from various trade publications show the sight used on both training missions and in combat action.
The Kobra Sight is an open collimator "red dot" combat optic using laser-generated "heads-up display" (HUD) technology to superimpose a reticle pattern onto a filtered lens which acts as an aiming device for the shooter. This system presents an unobstructed field of view, in 1x power which allows for extremely comfortable, "both eyes open" shooting. On average, most users will see a 1.5 times faster target acquisition and a 50% smaller shot group at 100 meters, in comparison to the iron sights. The filtered lens allows crystal clear viewing and the mounting bracket (which is an integral part of the sight) is centered over the bore for comfortable shooting by both right or left handed end users.

Hope you don't mind me adding a few comments on the ACM Kobra of my own. I received my ACM Kobra on Friday and so have had a couple of days to play with my new red dot...

user posted image

I was a bit disappointed with the sight from a quality and functionality point of view, but once I attached the ACM Kobra to my AK74 I was so pleased with the look that I can forgive it's obvious flaws.

The main flaws were the ghosting on the targeting cross-hairs and the quality of the finish.

My ratings for this piece were:

Quality & Finish: 2.5/5
Authenticity: 4/5
Functionality: 2.5/5
Value for money: 2/5
Coolness factor: 4/5

I did a video review on Blip.tv which can be seen here for the in-depth comments: Milgeek.co.uk's ACM Kobra video review

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the added info komrad Milgeek.co.uk

Maybe I am lucky, mine no ghosting.

Hello comrades...

Having purchased my ACM Kobra I soon began to worry about the safety of the optical plate - I reckon that one good BB hit would go straight through the plastic optic!

Were this a Western red dot - like an ACOG, EoTech or AimPoint - that wouldn't be a problem as there are several protective systems available to stop BBs smashing the optical plate. This includes things like 'Kill Flash' mesh and clear platic shields.

Unfortunately (as far as I know) there is nothing similar for the Russian Kobra optics.....So I decided to make my own, and here's how I did it:

1. THE 'HOW': Originally - I had actually foreseen this problem *before* I bought the Kobra - I had the idea that I would cut a small circle of clear plastic which I would fit inside the tubular sun hood...However, when I received the ACM Kobra I discovered the sun hood wasn't hard plastic after all, but rather squishy rubber!

And so, I had a second idea: The rubber sun hood - luckily - fixes to the front of the Kobra by means of a rubber tab and two small screws (see photo):

user posted image
Above: The unprotected optical element of the Kobra, clearly showing the two small sun hood fixing screws just bellow the optic plate.

...If I could cut a shield the same shape as the front of the Kobra I could use the screws to fix it firmly to the sight!

2. MATERIAL: First of all I did some research and found out which type of clear plastic would be most suitwable for this project. The most appropriate product seems to be:

Lexan Exell D - UV Resistant Polycarbonate - in 2mm thickness

I managed to find a source for this in the UK who sold the sheets in custom sizes from 200mm square upwards: www.theplasticshop.co.uk

I opted for a 500 x 500mm sheet, this cost me £8 (but shipping more than doubled that), and soon my oredr was on it's way!

3. TOOLS: Lexan Exell Polycarbonate is quite easy to cut, I used my Dremmel hobby drill and cutting tool. You might also want to use fine sand paper or modelling files to smooth your shield after cutting it out. I also needed a very small 5/64" drill to make the holes used to screw the shield to the front of the Kobra.

4. THE PROTOTYPE: I decided to try a quick and dirty prototype, just to see whether the concept was feasible. I did this by:
- Creating a template shape of the front of the sight using masking tape which I stuck on the Kobra and then traced teh shape I wanted with a pen.
- I then stuck the masking template onto the sheet of polycarbonate
- Using the Dremmel and it's cutting disk I cut out my shape
- I got rid of any plastic flash and shape edges with the Dremmel and it's sanding disk
- I placed the prototype onto the front of the Kobra to check fit, and marked where to drill the screw holes with a permanent marker
- I used one of the small Dremmel drills to make the screw holes

This is what you end up with....

user posted image

OK - this is a bit rough and ready, but it's just a prototype!

5. FITTING: The trick here, and the reason I chose the thinnest 2mm poly sheet, is to hide the home-made shield behind the Kobra's rubber sun-hood! If you have cut your shape correctly, your shield should fit nicely between the sun-hood and the Kobra itself, with the fitting screws attaching both the sun-hood and the shield to the sight. You can also just fit the shield on it's own, without the sun hood - looking something like this:

user posted image

...But by slotting the shield between the sun-hood and the Kobra your modification can be nearly invisible:

user posted image

6. HOW MUCH PROTECTION: OK, please note that I was after a preventative solution - I don't expect this to be full-proof. I am just not sure (yet) how this make-shift shield will stand up to a 500fps BB hit at 3 feet! (I will report back on this after some experiments). However, the extra layer of plastic between an oncoming BB and the optic has to be better than no protection at all, and my research did persuade me that 2mm Lexan Excell Polycarbonate *should* (I emphasise *should*) do the trick!

Having said that, I am obligated to say the following:

> I take absolutely no responsibility for any breakages or damage which results from anyone following my example. You should test the effectiveness of the shield yourself to be assured in your own mind of it's strength, and...

> UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you use the concept to produce any for of home-made eye protection! Not only is the Lexan Excell Polycarbonate not proofed for this use, but all good airsoft fields will not allow you to use home-made eye protection because of insurance reasons!

OK comrades - my first skirmish with the Kobra is tomorrow, so lets see if all goes well - I will report back.

I hope this is of some help to other ACM Kobra users and this concept may even work with the real thing! And if anyone should have comments or suggestions for improvements in production or materials please let me know!
